PROCEEDINGS OF GHANA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY ALUMNI MEETING HELD ON SUNDAY, 22 JANUARY 2012.

Members present ranged from the 2009 year group to the current 2011 year group who had their graduation a couple of weeks back. It was all joy for us to have met few weeks after graduation which took place on the 14 of January 2012.

Highlights from the meeting were centred on the following.

- The need to intensify advertisement for the University College in order to capture more students in the midst of intense competition from both public and private universities. It was agreed that the school should find resources to embark on a rigorous marketing campaign using both print and electronic media. The Alumni were also called upon to encourage persons seeking quality tertiary education to choose Ghana Baptist University College.

- It was suggested that the owners of G.B.U.C. i.e. Ghana Baptist Convention should step up its financial support towards the development of the institution.

- Also the alumni appealed to the University authorities to offer research grants for lecturers and past students who may want to continue their education for PHD and masters so that they can in turn help develop the University academically. To this end the authorities were urged to take on some of the graduates for their national service so that they can act as teaching assistants to support the already overburdened staff.

- The Alumni were also encouraged to visit the website of the University to access information and that the alumni portal should be regularly updated.

- Other internal issue such as certificates, attendance of meetings and the need for members to pay their dues and set up a fund for the alumni to support the school was discussed. The President hinted that the alumni made a pledge of GHC 500 to be given to the University on behalf of alumni during the just ended presidential ball.

Ghana Baptist University College prepares students for a life of service grounded christian tradition, social responsibility, Christian development and preparation for employment in a global community.

To make personnel, services and facilities of the institution available to meet appropriate educational, cultural, and christian needs of its several constituencies.

PURPOSE STATEMENT :::::

GBUC is an institution founded on Christian principles and teachings whose primary purpose is to conduct educational programs in the traditional arts and sciences and in other disciplines with the intent to prepare students for effective leadership and service in the various vocations.

Owned by the Ghana Baptist Convention and operated through a Board of Trustees elected by the Convention, the University engages in educational tasks in a manner consistent with the purposes of the Convention: to furnish the means by which the churches may carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28: 18-20). To achieve its purpose, the University has adopted several goals, among which are:

To be a Christian learning community where faith and knowledge contribute to the individual’s awareness: of himself and his obligations within a diverse and interrelated society; of truth and its force; of the joy of discovery and the beauty of existence; and of the legacy of the past, the challenge of the present, and the promise of the future.

To cultivate Christian community in which the Baptist principles of individual freedom and dignity as well as mutual kindness and respect and concern for others are stressed.

To encourage a climate of learning where the student may develop the lifelong habit of critical thinking in the search for truth.

To provide opportunities for the student to engage in a serious study of the Bible and to learn the philosophy and tenets of the Judeo-Christian heritage; to instill an awareness of and an appreciation for the distinctive Baptist contribution to Christian theology and for the values inherent in the Christian faith; to encourage Christian commitment.

To foster an awareness of the needs of the human community and the responsibility of each individual in an active life of service.

To make personnel, services and facilities of the institution available to meet appropriate educational, cultural, and religious needs of its several constituencies.

To serve the Baptist constituency through the development of informed, enlightened, sensitive leadership.
