- Life on Campus.
Ghana Baptist University College admits students from diverse backgrounds on both national and international levels. The Institution does not discriminate against anybody on grounds of colour, culture and religious affiliations. Students pursuing various programmes at GBUC are given equal treatment as far as academic and social life on campus is concerned. For the purposes of addressing academic and other related matters affecting students, the students at GBUC have been assigned individually to academic tutors (counselors), whom they could contact from time to time for academic and social issues affecting them to be addressed.
Besides, the office of the Dean of students serves as center for students’ guidance and counseling unit.
New Students Orientation
To make campus living and learning comfortable there is an orientation ceremony for all new students admitted to the Ghana Baptist University College. This is intended to welcome new students and help them to integrate into University life.
Through the Registrar, Dean of students and the Departmental Heads, Students are guided and exposed to existing facilities, rules and regulations as well as their rights and privileges in the University College.
- Use of University transport and other facilities
Students have adequate access to all facilities and other resources, which enhance effective learning and getting around on campus. University transport facilities may be ordered by organizers of approved student groups for any approved journeys in and outside the city of Kumasi in Ghana, where the University College is situated. There is bus services for some of our students who live in our hostel facilities at Abuakwa, and other areas in the city.
REPRESENTATIVE BODY OF STUDENTS
THE STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC)
The students’ body at the Ghana Baptist University College is governed by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC). Basically, the SRC serves as a mouth-piece of the students’ body and acts as a liaison between the administration and the students. The core function and powers of the executive committee of the SRC is centered on co-coordinating and serving as advisory organ of the entire students’ body in matters relating to students and other students’ organizations in Ghana and elsewhere. This it does by serving as the voice of all students in dealing with issues that are necessary for a smooth academic environment.
Through its constant touch with the University College’s authorities the SRC works towards building healthy student – student, and student – staff relations.
The composition of the SRC
The Executive Committee of the SRC has six (6) elected members: The President, The Vice President, the General Secretary, The Financial Secretary, The Treasurer and The Women’s Commissioner.
The Constitution of the SRC
The constitution is the supreme law for the governance of all students, clubs, associations, societies, and unions in GBUC. The Executive Committee of the SRC in GBUC is therefore empowered to operate within the boundaries of the constitution in all matters relating to students’ social life on campus.
Activities of the SRC
Students admitted to Ghana Baptist University College, are empowered by the University College, (through the SRC), to undertake various programmes of activities considered beneficial to the total development of the students, tailored towards the core values of the University College. Such programmes of activities include: industrial trips, inter – departmental debates, the SRC Week celebrations and a Campus Parliament dubbed “Friday Special”- a programme geared towards promoting interactive discussions amongst students through analysis of critical contemporary issues. The ultimate objective is enhancing the intellectual growth of students of the institution.
Students’ Clubs and Societies
Ghana Baptist University College students may form clubs and societies. A student clubs or societies are of two kinds: Clubs and societies which promote the members’ own desires and aspirations. They include religious organizations and old students associations, clubs and societies which promote the achievements of the policies and objectives of the University College. They include schools and departmental clubs.
The Departmental Clubs to which some students belong include: “HR. PEOPLE” (for students under the Human Resource Department), Entrepreneurship Students Association of Ghana, (ESAG), and Graduate Marketers Association of Ghana Students (GRAMAGS) – GBUC Chapter.
The Literary Group seeks to educate, inform and entertain The University Community through drama, chorography, and poetry recitals.
The Campus Christian Fellowship (CCF) is one key religious organization, which incorporates all students from various religious backgrounds. The members meet periodically to seek for spiritual guidance and protection from God through organized prayers.
Under the fatherly care and initiative of The PRESIDENT of the Ghana Baptist University, the Integrity Club (students’ movement against corruption), not only in GBUC, but Ghana in general was inaugurated on 28th October, 2011.
Relationship between Students and Staff
- Student – Student Relations. Students at GBUC act as brothers and sisters with high Christian ethical standards. Relationships among students are that of care and friendship; mutual respect and courtesy. Relationships between opposite sexes of students demonstrate high Christian moral standards.
- Staff – Student Relation. Staff members at GBUC act as mentors of students under high Christian ethical standards. Relationship between staff and students is one of care and friendship, mutual respect and courtesy.
Students Accommodation and Hostel Issues
Students who may need assistance or who may be confronted with problems related to accommodation and want to have them addressed can receive assistance through the Hostel Manager, Dean of Students, and the Registrar’s office. Besides, the Hostel facilities provided by the University College on Abuakwa campus, students are also permitted to look for their own accommodation needs in some of the privately owned hostels near the campus of the University College.
